GAS TESTING EXAMINATION: MY EXPERIENCE

The Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS)  is India's Ministry for Mining Safety-related with the Ministry of Labour and Employment. DGMS held statutory examinations for First Class Mines Manager Competency Certificates, Second Class Mines Manager Competency Certificates, Overman, Foreman, Mines mate, Sardar, and Gas Testing Examination. Gas Testing Certificate is necessary for applying for all statuary posts related to mining.

A person working below ground must have knowledge of mine gases and deal with them. DGMS made this mandatory for passing this exam. 

According to CMR 1957 regulation All mine managers, over man, foreman, Sardar who are applying for competency certificate they also have to submit Gas Testing Exam Passing Certificate with the application form. to secure their life for the future.

CANDIDATES APPEARING IN ORAL EXAMINATION-, UNDER CMR 2017 AND MMR 1961, ARE REQUESTED TO BRING THE FOLLOWING ORIGINAL DOCUMENTS FOR VERIFICATION TO ORAL EXAMINATION CENTRE: 

  1. ORIGINAL AFFIDAVIT  This is something DGMS has made mandatory for the first to all those who are applying for Gas Testing Examination

 2. MATRICULATION CERTIFICATE / SECONDARY SCHOOL CERTIFICATE / MARKSHEET (HHaving Date of birth Details). 

  3.  MEDICAL FITNESS form of fitness: Fitness certificate from the doctor.

 4. CHARACTER CERTIFICATE from  colliery manager or principal of any government sector.

5.LAMP HANDLING CERTIFICATE issued from VTC of any Underground Mine or any Technical Institute.

6. He must have paid exam fee Rs. 300/- to DGMS by Bharat Kosh online transaction.

7.AADHAAR CARD

8.DIPLOMA OR DEGREE CERTIFICATE OF APPLICANT.

9.Four Latest attested PHOTOGRAPHS (size-3.5 cm x3.5 cm) with the name of the candidate on the front side (top) here. three photographs should be pasted on A-4 size paper and one for your GT form.

10. Two large and one Small size Envelopes. 

A few Notes and Tips about GAS TESTING:

1. Age must be more than 20 years while you are applying.
2. I had applied for GT Oral examination in the month of July and I received my Call letter in the month of February just a week before my exam. So don't worry about your call letter. 
3. Different exam centers will be having different dates, mostly exam is held in the month of February.
4. You should write the address of VTC you want to apply on one envelope and put all aforesaid documents inside it including one small and large envelope. 
5. You will be getting your call letter into that small envelope you are providing so write your address properly on it and also on another large envelope as you will be getting your certificate into that through post incase you clear examination.
6. One important thing you should write your name o all document as written in your articulation certificate.

PROCEDURE FOR GAS TESTING EXAMINATION

There are two examiners on this exam. The whole exam is divided into two parts. One examiner will be a manager of mine and the other will be a mine inspector (DGMS).

First Examiner (Manager of mine)

1. Method of gas testing in an underground mine.
2. The right method of checking methane by a safety lamp.

Second Examiner (Mining Inspector)

1. Flame safety lamp components and their functions.
2. Change in flame on the different percentages of gas.
3. Rules and regulations related to Safety Lamp, Gases, etc.

DISTRICT: Udaipur
I will be sharing  set of  questions asked to me by both examiners:

Question asked by Mining Inspector:

*I was inside the seminar Hall*
Ques 1) Introduce yourself.
Ques 2) What are the subjects you were taught in your final semester?
Ques 3) What have you learned so far in Mine Safety Engineering subject?
Ques 4) What are the gases present in this room? ( indirectly he was asking me atmospheric gases )
Ques 4) What are the gases present in underground mines with percentages?
Ques 5)What are Standards of ventilation?
Ques 6) How will you measure dry and wet bulb temperature?
Ques 7) What is Relative Humidity?
Ques 8) *There was some useful mining gadget placed on Inspector table* Pointing it he asked which instrument you will use to measure dry and wet bulb temperature.
Ques 9)Explain practical working of the hygrometer and how will you measure relative humidity.
Ques 10)*There was disassembled Flame safety Lamp* He asked me to assemble that lamp.
Ques 11)Following that he also asked me to disassemble it again.

Question asked by Manager of Mine:

Ques 1) Introduce yourself.
Ques 2)As you are in the final year, why do you want a GT certificate?
Ques 3) What percentage of gases present in underground mines and how can we detect it?
Ques 4) What are the effects of CO on human beings?
Ques 5) What is Carboxyhaemoglobin?
Ques 6) What is the percentage of methane does this flame in the gas chamber indicate?
Ques 7) Why the wall of the gas chamber room is kept whole black and dark?
Ques 8) *Flame in chamber got extinguished* What was the reason?

Just be very sure if you don't know any answer  simply say SORRY, and if you know any answer just be clear and confident to answer it.

Result:

They announce the result on the same day, but it will take 4-6 months to get the certificate.
